Woodson, J. & Nancy Paulsen Books. (2014). Brown Girl Dreaming. Penguin Group (USA).

This book is a memoir written in verse by Jacqueline Woodson. At a very young age and as an African-American girl, Jacqueline experienced a world full of racism and discrimination. Her story contains memorable events that shaped her into the person that she is today. Despite all the challenges she faced, Woodson learns to discover herself and her place in this world as a writer.
Woodson uses vivid imagery that allows the reader to walk along herself as she discovers her identity and place in this world. Additionally, this book introduces important topics such as our nation’s racial history, activism, racism, segregation, divorce, and the Civil Rights Movement. She included a family tree and photographs that helped the reader make connections with Jacqueline’s life and her family. This is a great resource to use for cultural awareness and Black History Month.
