Universal Design for Learning is an approach to optimize instruction by designing a curriculum that supports the diverse needs of students. This framework focuses on considering student backgrounds, strengths, needs, and interest to design a flexible plan to offer equal and authentic learning opportunities for every student in the classroom. Educators must always consider the fact that students learn differently. Consequently, instruction must support and accommodate to diverse learners.

After careful consideration of the UDL guidelines, I was pleased to realize that I am already implementing some of these in my classroom. For representation, I provide support for vocabulary by having a print-rich classroom. In addition to anchor charts, graphics, and posters, my learning board displays the spiraled vocabulary along with a visual representation so students can continue making connections across content. I live in a border town where the influx of immigrant student has rapidly increased over the past few years. For my students, the use of cognates, Flocabulary, and videos has made great impact in their language development.

There's always room for improvement, and I feel the need to incorporate more research based projects that will encourage my scholars to take risks and accountability in their learning. Providing such experiences will increase student participation and engagement .
