Cleary, B., & Zelinsky, P. O. (1983). Dear Mr. Henshaw. New York, NY: HarperCollins.

After his parents divorce, ten-year-old Leigh Botts had to move with his mom to a new school in a new town. Leigh feels lonely and had a difficult time coping with his new life with an absent father. Leigh finds comfort by writing letters to his favorite author and starts a private dairy. His writing helped Leigh mature and accept his new life.
Beverly Cleary captivated a strong topic through a narrative that displays how difficult it can be for a child to accept that his parents will no longer be together. Through vivid writing, we witness the protagonist’s evolution as he learns how to cope with life-challenges in a mature manner. This fictional story exposes the themes of family, divorce, and loneliness. This book is an excellent resource that can be used to encourage children to identify and express their emotions through writing.
