Cherry, M. A., & Harrison, V. (2019). Hair Love (First Edition). Kokila.
Summary:
This story introduces Zuri, a young African American girl, and the confidence in her different hair styles, as well as the different “moods” she relates to each. Her father is the first to be introduced, and is described as a hardworking man, who is often tired. For this reason she attempts to do her own hair, but her father hears the noise she is making and offers help. Her hair is done as puffy hair buns, which she really likes. Her mom then enters their home, and Zuri greets her joyfully. The main character then explains her hair is a combination of her, her mother and her father, ultimately: hair love.
Cherry incorporated vivid illustrations that portrayed the essence of self-confidence. This book exposes children to different aspects of the African American heritage. Additionally, it can be used to encourage world wide young audiences to value self-pride and appreciate parental relationships.
