Denise, A. A., & Escobar, P. (2019). Planting Stories: The Life of Librarian and Storyteller Pura
Belpré (Illustrated ed.). HarperCollins.
This book is a biography of Pura Teresa Belpré that focuses on her contributions to folklore storytelling and bilingual literature. In 1921, Pura Belpre left her home in San Juan Puerto Rico to embark on a journey in New York City. She began working as a bilingual assistant in a library, where she soon realized the lack of culturally diverse materials on the shelves. Therefore, she started planting her story seeds across the land. Traveling from library to library, she spread the love for storytelling in English and Spanish.
The vivid illustrations in this book created a charming mood that emphasized the wonderful use of colors and details throughout the story. The book includes Spanish words with English translations for language and vocabulary development. This is a great resource for cultural awareness. In addition, this book offers factual information that can connect to a worldwide audience.
