Nelson, K. (2008). We Are the Ship: The Story of Negro League Baseball (1st ed.). Little, Brown
Books for Young Readers.

Throughout history, our nation has faced cultural challenges of inclusion, and baseball was not an exception. Back in time, this sport was perceived as a sport for white players and black men were discouraged to participate. Fortunately, a group of brave men decided to form the Negro League and how these amazing athletes changed the game. In this book we are introduced to the history of Negro League Baseball. It includes factual information about baseball teams, players, challenges, wins, and losses that affected the world of baseball.
Nelson included vivid illustrations from oil paintings that help visualize the evolution of the Negro League Baseball. Additionally, it features an index, fold-out pages, and bibliographical references that help the reader explore the history of baseball. The organization of the book is arranged by “innings” instead of chapters. This is a great resource to raise cultural awareness and emphasize the importance of acceptance.
