Sendak, M. (1963). Where the Wild Things Are. HarperCollins.

Max is sent to his room without having dinner for being mischievous. Because of Max’s great imagination, his room is transformed into a forest that allows him to escape his mother’s strict rules. As he reaches an island where the wild things are, Max is encountered by ferocious creatures that try to scare him. Instead, the wild things realize that Max is the wildest thing of all and they make him their king. After a lot of happy play, Max feels lonely and decides to travel back to his room where he finds his dinner served and warm.

Sendak incorporated storytelling through a combination of rich text and vivid illustrations that emphasized the power of imagination. The illustrations in this book allow the audience to visualize a world where the imagination rules, and allows the reader to understand the characters and their relationships. The cover of the book portraits a fantastic creature that captivates the reader’s attention. This book is an excellent resource that can be used to encourage children to embrace their independence and individuality to maximize their imagination.
